Breast augmentation is popular, period. It’s consistently among the leading cosmetic surgery procedures performed every year in the U.S. But a recent study conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons found that breast augmentation is more popular in the western U.S. than anywhere else in the country. We can certainly attest to the popularity of breast augmentation at Portland Plastic Surgery Group, but we want to explore this finding a bit more here.
Why Is Breast Augmentation So Popular?
It’s important to first understand why the procedure is so popular to begin with. According to the RealSelf website, the go-to reference for many women considering getting breast implants, breast augmentation has a 98% “Worth It” rating. The rating is calculated based on input from actual patients who use the site. For many women, getting breast implants enhances their confidence and helps them feel more feminine.
But what explains why women in the west are more likely to get breast augmentation than women in other regions of the country. Weather and culture probably play a significant role. Women who spend days on the sunny beaches of Southern California want to look their best in bikinis and—for many women—that means larger breasts.
Culturally, the west is often associated with a more open-minded attitude when it comes to appearance. Remember the phrase, “if you’ve got it, flaunt it?” That is pretty accurate when it comes to the West Coast. And if you don’t “got it?” Breast augmentation is one solution.
Selecting a Breast Augmentation Surgeon
With the popularity of breast augmentation in the west, it’s important to educate yourself about the procedure if you’re thinking about getting breast implants. There are several choices to make, starting with the selection of a plastic surgeon to perform the operation. The surgeon you choose should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS), which requires physicians to pass a rigorous test after completing years of advanced training focused on plastic surgery.
Even if friends or family members recommend a specific surgeon, it’s helpful to schedule consultations with at least 2 or 3 other surgeons to feel more confident about the choice you make. Some people may not “click” with a surgeon who someone else recommends, and it’s extremely important to feel comfortable with the surgeon you choose (as well as the staff at the practice).
At Portland Plastic Surgery Group, Drs. O’Brien, Zegzula, and Hayes are board-certified plastic surgeons, and Dr. Baltrusch is a board-eligible plastic surgeon. Their excellent credentials and expertise in breast surgery make it easy to choose them for your breast augmentation procedure.
Review Before-and-After Photos
Reviewing before-and-after photos is another tool you can use to help determine if a surgeon is right for you. Each doctor’s gallery provides a good idea of what that doctor considers to be good results, so before making an appointment, you should like what you see.
