What Makes Different Breast Implants More Expensive?

If you’re considering breast augmentation here in Portland, there’s no doubt that cost plays at least a supporting role in your decision. It may surprise you to learn that the cost of breast augmentation can vary quite a bit based on the type of implants you choose. Let’s take a look at some of the factors that play a role (and others that don’t) in the ultimate cost of your breast augmentation.

  • Size of implants: Believe it or not, the size of the implants you choose has very little to do with the final cost of your surgery. Larger implants aren’t necessarily more expensive than smaller versions of the same models, so you should feel free to choose the size that suits your body best.
  • Implant material: The material that comprises the implant is a much more significant determining factor when it comes to cost. A good rule of thumb is that silicone implants tend to be pricier than saline, and the latest highly-cohesive silicone gel implants are more expensive still. However, there’s a reason. Not only do silicone implants use more expensive components, but most patients and surgeons alike agree that they yield more attractive results. In last month’s blog post, we discussed the continuing evolution of silicone breast implants.
  • Texture and shape: While less important than their material, the exterior texture of implants, as well as their shape, plays a role in cost, too. Simpler options — round and smooth texture — are typically less expensive than textured or shaped implants. However, I remind my Portland breast augmentation patients that the difference isn’t too significant, and choosing the right implants for your body can make a world of difference when it comes to your results.

Of course, other factors, in addition to the type of implants you choose, also affect the final cost of your surgery. These include the significance of your procedure; fees charged by other providers, such as the anesthesiologist; and even where in the country you have your breast augmentation performed. Just like rent or a gallon of milk, prices for plastic surgery vary around the country.
