Your Male Breast Reduction Consultation

Although it can be difficult to talk about, many men suffer from gynecomastia, a condition that causes feminine-looking breasts. Sometimes this condition is caused by excess fat, but more frequently the cause of gynecomastia is more complex and not related to a man’s weight at all.  Certain medications and illnesses can lead to the development of enlarged breasts in men, so it is important for you to schedule an appointment with a primary care physician before pursuing plastic surgery.

Our surgeons customize their surgical approaches depending on the causes of your breast growth. In some cases, liposuction of the chest is enough for a favorable result. Other patients may require surgical excision of glandular tissue to ensure symptoms don’t reappear. Either way, a male breast reduction is easily tolerated with minimal downtime.

Male Breast Reduction Procedure

In most cases, the surgery begins with an incision around the areola. This incision typically heals to a very faint scar that’s nearly invisible. Once the surgeon makes the incision, he or she reduces excess fat and tissue, and reshapes the area for a masculine appearance. If necessary, he or she also surgically excises sagging skin. Once the surgery is complete, the surgeon closes the incisions with sutures and protects them with bandages.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

After a brief period of observation, patients to return home to rest. Discomfort is minimal and can be managed well with prescribed medicine. We typically take stitches out after a few days. Some bruising and swelling is normal, and most patients are able to return to work after about 1 week.

Over time, the scars typically fade from red to pink to lighter-than-flesh-colored. With proper postoperative care, including keeping your follow-up appointments, the results of male breast reduction can last indefinitely.
