Male Breast Reduction

Swimming, working out, and romantic intimacy should be enjoyable, but they can be stressful for men with enlarged breasts — a condition called gynecomastia. We perform male breast reduction surgery at Portland Plastic Surgery Group to help men to feel more comfortable with their chests. It is a fairly simple outpatient procedure that can dramatically boost confidence and overall happiness.

Your Male Breast Reduction

Although it can be difficult to talk about, many men suffer from gynecomastia, a condition that causes feminine-looking breasts. Sometimes the appearance is caused by excess fat, but often it is more complex than that; even men of normal weights can have symptoms. Some medications and illnesses can also cause the development of male breasts, so it's important to see your general practitioner before pursuing plastic surgery.

Our surgeons customize their surgical approaches depending on the causes of your breast growth. In some cases, liposuction of the chest is enough for a favorable result. Other patients may require surgical excision of glandular tissue to ensure symptoms don't reappear. In either case, male breast reduction is an outpatient procedure.

Procedure & Recovery

In most cases, your surgeon begins surgery with an incision around the areola. With proper postoperative care, this incision typically heals to a very faint scar that's nearly invisible. Once your surgeon makes the incision, he or she reduces excess fat and tissue, and reshapes the area for a masculine appearance. If necessary, he or she also surgically excises sagging skin.

After surgery, your surgeon closes your incisions with sutures and protects them with bandages. After a brief period of observation, you're able to return home to rest. Discomfort is minimal and can be managed well with prescribed medicine. We typically take stitches out after a few days. Some bruising and swelling is normal, and most patients are able to return to work after about 1 week.

Over time, the scars typically fade from red to pink to lighter-than-flesh-colored. With proper postoperative care, including keeping your follow-up appointments, the results of your male breast reduction can last indefinitely.
