Breast Lift

Most women experience some degree of breast sagging or drooping, whether it’s due to the natural aging process, significant weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or gravity. A breast lift, also called mastopexy, can resolve this issue for many women, achieving a look that is more youthful and perky. Portland Plastic Surgery Group performs breast lift in Portland, Oregon, with a personalized approach, customizing the procedure to each woman, and offering the option of a “short scar” technique.

To discuss your breast enhancement options with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons, request a consultation online or call our office at (503) 292-9200.

Breast Lift Benefits

Women choose breast lift surgery for a variety of reasons, which include:

  • Raising and tightening the breast
  • Creating a more youthful look
  • Reducing and reshaping the areola

Combining Procedures

Although a breast lift does improve breast shape and position, it does not restore lost volume. If lost volume is also a concern, breast lifts can be combined with breast augmentation. Because breast sagging and drooping are often associated with childbirth and breastfeeding, the procedure is also often combined with body contouring procedures — such as a tummy tuck or liposuction — as part of a Mommy Makeover.

Breast Lift With Implants

For women with sagging breasts who have also lost volume in their breasts, we often recommend a breast lift with implants to restore lost volume and give a more youthful shape. During a breast lift surgery, the breast is reshaped, the nipples are repositioned, and asymmetry is addressed, so adding breast implants at the same time can help restore the breasts to their former appearance.

  • A breast lift with implants combination procedure is popular with women who have:
  • Lost breast tissue volume due to breastfeeding
  • Lost a significant amount of weight and experienced sagging and volume loss in their breasts
  • Have experienced sagging and loss of breast tissue due to aging

Combining a breast lift with breast implants enables your surgeon to tighten and lift the loose tissue as well as restore lost volume to enhance the results of a breast lift and help you look as good as before, or maybe even better!

Recovery from a breast lift with implants is similar to recovery from a breast lift, and your surgeon will provide instructions to follow to achieve the best possible results.

Breast Lift Techniques

A breast lift can revive your youthful figure without changing the size of your natural breasts. It can also round out the upper part of your breast to create a more youthful shape and firmness. A woman’s breasts can change after pregnancy, after losing weight, or simply as they age, and multiple techniques can be used to address these challenges. Options include:

Short Scar Breast Lift

Involves an incision that encircles the areola and then travels straight down to the breast crease. This technique, also called a vertical or lollipop lift, is great for patients who want to minimize visible scars, especially young women with good skin elasticity.

Breast Lift With Internal Bra

Lifts and reshapes the breasts while enhancing fullness and cleavage naturally. It adds a breast crease incision to the short scar technique, which allows the surgeon to create an internal bra that reinforces and stays hidden in the breast crease.

Breast Lift With Implants

Combines breast augmentation with a breast lift to improve breast shape and add fullness with saline or silicone implants.

Breast Lift With Fat Grafting

Combines a breast lift with fat grafting to reshape and add fullness to the breasts. After performing the breast lift, the surgeon harvests excess fat with liposuction of the abdomen, thighs, flanks, or bra line. The surgeon then purifies the fat and injects it into specific areas of the breasts such as the cleavage area or to add overall fullness.

Breast Lift Recovery

Plenty of rest is necessary for a swift and complete recovery, so be sure to allow your body the time it needs to heal. We will give you specific instructions and be available to answer your questions during recovery, so you can get back to your usual routine and enjoy your perky new breasts.

Recovery Milestones

While experiences vary, expect to reach the following milestones in the specified time frame (does not include implants or fat grafting):

  • No longer need pain medication: 3 to 5 days
  • Return to nonstrenuous work and activities: 1 week
  • Bruising fades: 2 weeks
  • Wear surgical bra: at least 2 to 3 weeks
  • Resume strenuous exercise: 6 weeks
  • 75% healed: 3 to 4 months
  • Final results: up to 1 year

If you choose to combine your breast lift with implants or fat grafting, your surgeon will provide instructions on how to make your recovery as quick and painless as possible.

Common Questions

How painful is the surgery?

For most patients, discomfort is mild to moderate after breast lift surgery. It is common to experience a feeling of tightness for the first few weeks.

Do I have to get both breasts lifted?

Our surgeons perform breast enhancement surgery to help the breasts look beautiful, youthful, and balanced; therefore, they personalize the procedure for each patient and breast. Sometimes one breast needs a lift and the other does not.

If I have larger areolas, can that be corrected during a breast lift?

Certainly! Many women have their areolas resized and reshaped during the surgery.

Will I lose nipple sensation?

Patient experiences vary after breast lift surgery; some have reduced nipple sensitivity, some feel more sensitive, and others notice no change. Typically, any unusual changes are temporary and fade in about 6 to 8 weeks.

Will my bra size change following surgery?

Depending on the amount of excess skin removed, you may need to wear a smaller cup size.
